Morocco Family Tours - Private Tours Designed for Families with Children

Family travel works when the planning understands children - not just the destination. Every detail of a family Morocco tour is different from an adult one: shorter driving days, riads chosen for courtyards and pools, activities paced for children's attention spans, flexibility when someone is unwell. Since 2011, we have been adapting private Morocco journeys around the reality of travelling with children.

Why Morocco for families

A Country That Moves at a Child's Pace

Family travel works when the planning understands children - not just the destination. Every detail of a private Morocco family tour is different from an adult one: shorter driving days, riads chosen for courtyards and pools, activities paced for children's attention spans, child car seats included as standard, flexibility when someone is unwell.

We select accommodation for interior courtyards and pool access. From muleback treks adapted to their pace along High Atlas trails near Marrakech to engaging monument visits with brief stories, every experience is crafted to spark their natural curiosity.

Moroccan culture genuinely welcomes children - riad staff, shopkeepers, and village families greet and engage with them in a way that changes how the whole trip feels. The geography itself is naturally episodic - medina to mountain pass to oasis to desert plain every two hours, structured almost accidentally around an eight-year-old's attention span. Moroccan food is safe for children by default: tagine, couscous, and msemen are mild, with spices added separately at the table.

School holiday windows align well with the best travel conditions: spring and autumn offer 20-26°C across Morocco, October half-term is ideal for the desert, and summer works for the Atlantic coast at Essaouira. Since 2011, we have been adapting private Morocco journeys around the reality of travelling with children.

Desert, Culture, Coast or Soft Adventure - Choose Your Family Morocco

Most families come with one priority experience in mind. Here are the four theme directions we build family routes around most often. Any combination works - tell us which matters most.

Children with camel guide in Merzouga
Ages 5+
Merzouga, Zagora & the kasbah route

The Sahara for Families

The Sahara works for families when structured right: driving days broken into two-hour segments, a 30-45 minute camel ride, a comfortable bivouac with proper beds. The kasbahs of Ait Benhaddou engage children in a way medinas rarely do - towers to climb, river crossings by stepping stone.

Programme highlights
  • Camel ride at sunset (family-paced)
  • Bivouac night (comfortable camp)
  • Sandboarding on Erg Chebbi (ages 7+)
  • Ait Benhaddou kasbah with local guide

Ages 6+
Marrakech, Fes & artisan workshops

Medinas Made Engaging

Medinas work for children when structured around tasks rather than observation. A souk treasure hunt turns a medina walk into a navigation game. In Fes, tanneries viewed from balconies above - visual, dramatic, no long explanations needed.

Programme highlights
  • Marrakech souk treasure hunt
  • Zellige tile workshop (ages 7+)
  • Fes tanneries from the balconies
  • Msemen & mint tea cooking session
Family on Essaouira beach on the Atlantic coast
All ages
Essaouira, Agadir & the Atlantic villages

Atlantic Morocco

Morocco's Atlantic coast suits families who want a rest day in the circuit. Essaouira is a walled medina with wide beaches ten minutes from the centre, consistent beginner surf. Oualidia lagoon: children wade in waist-high calm water and eat oysters from the beds.

Programme highlights
  • Essaouira beach + beginner surf (ages 8+)
  • Oualidia lagoon wade & oyster tasting
  • Agadir resort beach (pool + sea)
  • Asilah medina & whitewashed murals
Children riding mules in the High Atlas near Imlil
Ages 5+
High Atlas, Imlil & Valley of Roses

Mountains, Mules & Easy Walks

The High Atlas is 90 minutes from Marrakech and feels genuinely wild. Children ride mules on the tracks above Imlil - no skill needed, feels adventurous. Berber family lunch above the village. Valley of Roses in May fills the road with pink petals.

Programme highlights
  • Mule ride from Imlil toward Toubkal base
  • Berber family lunch in Atlas village
  • Valley of Roses, Kelaa M'Gouna (May)
  • Barbary macaques in Azrou cedar forest

Our take:

Most families combine two themes. The most common is Desert + Soft Adventure (three desert days, one Atlas day on the way back). The second most common is Culture + Coast. Tell us your priorities and we will weight the route accordingly.

Found the theme that fits your family?

Tell us your children's ages and which theme matters most - Sahara, medinas, coast, or mountains - and we'll build the route around it.

Choose your format

Short Family Break or Full Family Circuit?

The most practical family travel question is not where to go - it is how much time you can actually take. Here is what each format delivers, and what each leaves out.

Focused & manageable

Short Family Break (5-7 days)

Five to seven days concentrates on two or three experiences done properly - typically the Sahara and Marrakech, or the Atlas and the coast. Fewer driving days, easier for younger children and families travelling during school term windows.

  • Less time in transit, more time in place
  • Easier for ages 4-8
  • Works during school half-term
  • Covers 2-3 experiences only
Duration
5-7 days
Highlights
2-3
Price

The complete Morocco

Full Family Circuit (10-14 days)

Ten to fourteen days covers the full country - Sahara, imperial city medina, coastal days, mountains - in a single one-way route between two airports. Better value per day, more varied memories, works well for children from age 8 upward.

  • Full country coverage
  • One-way route, no backtracking
  • Best for ages 8-16
  • Harder for under-7s without rest days
Duration
10-14 days
Highlights
4-5
Price

Our take:

If your youngest is under 7, take the short break and come back for the full circuit in a few years. If your children are 8-16, do the full circuit - the variety of landscapes holds their attention, and the memories are proportionally richer.

Family experiences

The Moments That Stay With Children

The experiences families talk about after they come home are not always the ones parents plan most carefully. These are the ones we build itineraries around.

First Camel Ride Into the Sahara

Camels line up at the erg edge at 5pm. Thirty-five minutes into the dunes, the camp appears between two sand walls. Named first by most families.

Ait Benhaddou Kasbah Visit

The best child-friendly heritage site in Morocco. Towers to climb, a river crossing by stepping stones, and Gladiator/Game of Thrones filming history.

Marrakech Souk Treasure Hunt

A list at the entrance: lantern, leather bag, babouche slippers, wooden box. Two hours of navigation game through the alleyways.

Zellige Tile Workshop

A master craftsman shows children how geometric tiles are cut and arranged. Each child makes and takes home a small panel. Ages 7+.

Bivouac Sunrise in the Sahara

At 6am the camp is silent and the dune light is pink-orange. Children who see this have already seen something they will describe at school.

Mule Ride in the Atlas

The paved road ends at Imlil. Children ride mules up the stone tracks - no skill needed, genuinely adventurous. Berber family lunch above 1,800m.

Surfboard Hire at Essaouira

Small, consistent waves, permanent offshore wind. First stand on a board almost guaranteed in a single session, ages 8+.

Msemen & Mint Tea Cooking

Lalla Fatima teaches families to make msemen and mint tea. Ninety minutes, ends with eating what you made.

Common questions

Morocco Family Tours FAQ

Is Morocco safe for families with children?

Yes. Morocco is one of the most family-friendly destinations in North Africa, with a culture that genuinely welcomes children. Private travel removes the main safety concerns of group tours - no shared transport, no fixed schedules, and a driver who knows the family-friendly routes. 24/7 support throughout. For current guidance, see the UK FCDO travel advice.

What is the minimum age for a Morocco family tour?

We design tours for children from age 2. For very young children, we recommend short breaks with a single riad in Marrakech as a base and day trips, avoiding multi-night desert bivouacs. From age 6, most standard itineraries work well.

Do you provide child car seats?

Yes. We provide Group 0 and Group 1 seats for infants and toddlers, and Group 2 booster seats for older children. Child car seats are a standard inclusion - specify your child's exact age and weight at booking.

How long are the driving days on a family tour?

Driving days are capped at four hours maximum, always with a 30-minute break, and adjusted further for younger children. Most family circuits average 2-3 hours per day, broken into shorter segments.

What accommodation is used on family tours?

Riads with interior courtyards and pools where available, family rooms with interconnecting doors, and desert bivouacs with proper beds and en-suite facilities. We avoid roof-terrace rooms with unsafe staircase access.

Can dietary restrictions be accommodated?

Yes. We communicate dietary restrictions and allergies to every property on the route before departure. Moroccan cuisine is naturally mild by default, which makes it one of the easier cuisines for sensitive palates.

What if a child is unwell during the tour?

Private travel means complete flexibility. If a child is unwell, the day starts later or the itinerary adjusts on the road. Our drivers carry a first aid kit. 24/7 support included.

Is the Sahara bivouac suitable for young children?

For children under 6, we generally recommend day visits rather than an overnight bivouac, as desert nights can be cold and disorienting. From age 6-7, one comfortable bivouac night works well. See our Merzouga desert guide for details.

Can grandparents join for a three-generation trip?

Yes. We regularly design three-generation itineraries with a gentler pace, more rest days, and accommodation suited to varying mobility levels.

How far in advance should we book a family tour?

We recommend booking 2-3 months ahead for peak periods (Easter, summer, October half-term, Christmas). For off-peak travel, 4-6 weeks is usually sufficient.
